AAWRE Board of Trustees recognized two of its founding trustees for their leadership and service on the board. Founding AAWRE president, Jeffrey B. Bradley, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE and James P. Heaney, Ph.D., P.E., DEE, D.WRE, were given plaques during the fall AAWRE board meeting, for their work and service on the board. Dr. Bradley served on the board from AAWRE's inception in October 2004 until fall 2008 and Dr. Heaney served on the board from fall 2006 until fall 2008.
Dr. Bradley is the founder and president of WEST Consultants engineering firm, based out of Salem, Oregon, and will continue to work as leader of the firm and instruct ASCE courses related to hydraulics and water resources. Dr. Bradley also was an instrumental member in starting the Environmental Water Resources Institute (EWRI) and is the conference chair of the 2009 IAHR Congress, scheduled to take place in Vancouver, British Columbia in August 2009.
Dr. Heaney is the Professor and Chair of the Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida in Gainesville and will continue teach at the university. Dr. Heaney will continue to participate in the numerous professional organizations that he's been involved with, including many technical committees and review panels. Some of his current activities include participating on the Water Environment Federation on National Policy Forum on Wet Weather Management Futures and the National Academies in Engineering Implications of Uncertainties in Future Water Budgets and Flows in South Florida.
AAWRE says thank you to Dr. Bradley and Dr. Heaney for their service, leadership, and efforts to lead the Academy in building a solid foundation.
Beginning last fall, AAWRE welcomed EWRI immediate past-president, Kyle E. Schilling, P.E., BCEE, D.WRE, Dist.M.ASCE and Robert G. Traver, Ph.D. P.E., D.WRE, professor from Villanova University to fill the vacated posts left by Bradley and Heaney, for a 3-year term on AAWRE board ending in fall 2011.
Mr. Schilling currently serves on the EWRI governing board and is a retired director of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Institute for Water Resources (IWR). Mr. Schilling is a past chairman of ASCE's Executive Committee and is a Distinguished Member of ASCE. He still participates in numerous organizations and various committees. Mr. Schilling also serves as associate editor of Public Works Management & Policy Journal.
Professor Traver has taught at Villanova University since 1988 and while at Villanova, Dr. Traver has conducted research on topics that include modeling of stream hydraulics, urban hydrology, water quality, and measures to mitigate stormwater effects of urbanization. Professor Traver chairs the EWRI Stormwater Infrastructure Committee and he founded the Villanova Urban Stormwater Partnership and serves as its director.
AAWRE's mission is to improve the practice, elevate standards, and advance the profession of water resources engineering by certifying engineers with specialized knowledge in water resources, recognizing the ethical practice of water resources engineering at the expert level, encouraging continued professional development for engineers, and supporting positions on water resources issues important to the public health.
The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers was founded by members of the ASCE's Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) and is an Academy of the Civil Engineering Certification, Inc. (CEC).
