The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE) is a non-profit organization formed in 2004 by water resources engineers who were members of the American Society of Civil Engineers' Environmental and Water Resources Institute(EWRI) to improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the profession of water resources engineering. The Academy created the voluntary, post-license Diplomate, Water Resources Engineer (D.WRE) credential to provide professional engineers an opportunity to gain further recognition in the broad field of water resources engineering.
Water Resources Engineering is the professional discipline for the stewardship and sustainable use of the world's water and related resources. Water Resources Engineers develop and apply scientific and engineering principles to plan, design, construct, manage, operate and maintain infrastructure programs.

The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers' mission is to improve the practice, elevate the level of standards, and advance the profession of water resources engineering by certifying engineers with specialized knowledge in water resources, recognizing the ethical practice of water resources engineering at the expert level, encouraging continued professional development for engineers, and supporting positions on water resources issues important to the public health.
The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers is the first academy created under the guidance of the Civil Engineering Certification, Inc. (CEC).
