Who created AAWRE?

The American Academy of Water Resources Engineers was founded by members of the ASCE's Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) and was created under the guidance and leadership of the Civil Engineering Certification, Inc.(CEC).

What is AAWRE's mission?

AAWRE's mission is to improve the practice, elevate standards, and advance the profession of water resources engineering by certifying engineers with specialized knowledge in water resources, recognizing the ethical practice of water resources engineering at the expert level, encouraging continued professional development for engineers, and supporting positions on water resources issues important to the public health.

What is Diplomate, Water Resources Engineer (D.WRE)?

Diplomate, Water Resources Engineer (D.WRE) credential is a voluntary, post-license credential that provides recognition of advanced expertise in a specialty discipline of water resources engineering, advanced professional experience, strong ethics and a commitment to life-long learning and continuing professional development. What are the benefits of D.WRE? What are the requirements to apply for D.WRE? Is AAWRE a membership organization?

No, AAWRE is not a membership organization. Associations have membership dues that pay for subscription to its journals, publications, offer discounts to attend conferences, etc. However, the annual certification fee that Diplomates are required to pay annually, the fees pay for the D.WRE credential and the right for the Diplomate to use the D.WRE designation after their name.

What are the different ways that I can apply for the D.WRE?

Prospective candidates may apply the following ways:

  1. Apply online.
  2. Download the Word copy of the application and submit your electronic copy of the application via E-mail to AAWRE at: [email protected]
  3. Download the Word copy of the application and mail your hard copy of the application to AAWRE at:

  5. Email your updated resume or CV and list of (3) professional references to AAWRE.
How long does it take to fill out the online application?

The online application process normally takes about 45 minutes to complete. It is helpful for a speedy process if you have an electronic copy of your resume and/or CV readily available to provide information from. A resume or CV will also need to be uploaded into the online application.

Could I save portions of the online application and go back later to complete?

Yes, you will be able to save portions/sections to your online application and then go back later to complete. You will need to remember your Username and Password in order to log in each time you sign out.

What should I do if I obtained my educational degree(s) from a foreign country?

Please list the degree(s), the years attended, the name and location of the educational institution you attended. AAWRE will accept foreign degrees, acceptable to the Admissions Committee.

Do I need my educational transcripts?

No, AAWRE no longer requires educational transcripts for applicants. The admissions committee only requires educational transcripts on individual applicant's basis, if the candidate has taken graduate level courses but did not graduate or if the degree(s) are in another discipline, other than engineering.
