In my last letter, I described that my two priorities for the American Academy of Water Resources (AAWRE)  and its board certification program for Diplomates are to: 1) communicate the importance of board certification to employers of water resources engineers and agencies responsible for the design, construction, and management of water resources infrastructure and 2) ensure that Diplomates experience value in maintaining the highest standards of our profession.

With your continued leadership in maintaining the highest professional standards we have made progress in these priorities and I would like to take this opportunity to update you and solicit your ideas and feedback. Over the past year, the AAWRE Board members, committees and staff have worked to increase the visibility of Board Certification for you- our AAWRE Diplomates - through our various marketing and outreach activities.

We see Board Certification of civil engineers in the specialties in which they practice as a key component in the ASCE Raise the Bar initiative, and we will be working with ASCE and CEC this year to incorporate specialty certification as an important raise the bar initiative.

We are also in the process of launching the ASCE Board Certified Diplomates Online Directory. This is an exciting and vital tool that provides direct benefits to you because the engineering community and the public can search the Directory and find you if your profile matches the search criteria!

Here’s how you can help benefit your Academy and yourself!

  1. Update your profile information for the Online Directory. Please access the site and update your profile and privacy settings. To do this, simply click on the Help link at top of the page and set up your profile & privacy settings. The privacy settings determine what the public can see.
  2. Please click on the link here and join our AAWRE LinkedIn group!  Stay in touch with your colleagues and exchange vital information and news.
  3. Share your successes. We are asking for your input and feedback on testimonials on your achievement of AAWRE Board Certification as a Diplomate. In addition, have you received a promotion, or hired, or your firm benefited for consideration for engineering projects because of your D.WRE Board Certification? We would like to hear your stories. Send an email to us.
  4. Finally, I encourage you to recruit your well-qualified colleagues to apply to become Diplomates in Water Resources Engineering. Send a quick email with their names and email addresses to us at [email protected].

We continue to encourage companies to promote board certification in career development plans and as a factor when weighing qualifications within procurement plans for professional engineering services both as a strategy to maintain excellence in our profession of water resources engineering and as a tangible benefit for you.

Please let us know how we are doing. You may send me an email at [email protected] or to our staff at [email protected].  On behalf of the AAWRE Board of Trustees and staff, we thank you for your continued excellence and your leadership in the engineering profession!

Kind regards,

Roger T. Kilgore, P.E., D.WRE, F.ASCE
