Message from AAWRE President Debbie Lee
Welcome to the latest edition of the AAWRE President’s Letter. Our goal is to keep you updated on the latest news about AAWRE.
The first thing that I would like to let you to know is that we will soon be asking you to vote for a candidate to become a member of the AAWRE Board of Trustees for the 2018-2020 term. We appreciate all the great nominations we received and are very excited to announce that we have selected Dr. Pascale Champagne and Ms. Ruth Ayn Hocker as the final nominees for this important position. Also, Dr. Joe Manous has been nominated to serve as AAWRE President-Elect. An announcement with more information about the election and candidates will be sent out shortly. The election period will be through the end of August, so please keep this in mind and be prepared to cast your vote.
I also want to let everyone know that we will be having AAWRE booths in the exhibition hall at two important upcoming conferences. The first is the 2017 Water Environment Federation and Technical Exhibition & Conference (WEFTEC), which will be held in Chicago, Illinois on September 30 – October 4, 2017. The second is the 2017 American Water Resource Association Annual Conference, which will be held in Portland, Oregon on November 5-9, 2017.
We are very excited about having AAWRE represented at these conferences, and the great opportunity this presents to tell others about the benefits of becoming a Diplomate of AAWRE. In that regard, we feel that current AAWRE Diplomates are best able to help us tell the great story about the benefits of joining AAWRE, and would like to encourage any Diplomates who are attending either of these conferences to spend some time helping us staff the booths. If you are interested, please contact staff at firstname.lastname@example.org regarding the WEFTEC conference, and AAWRE Marketing Committee chair Jim Barton at email@example.com regarding the AWRA conference.
We are also scheduling a very interesting webinar on “Applications of Remote Sensing to Water Resources Engineering” in September. More information will be forthcoming.
I want to let you know about some important changes that will be made to the AAWRE certification criteria and fees. These changes are the result of a recent initiative by Civil Engineering Certification Inc. (CEC) to standardize the post-licensure certification processes used by the various specialties within the civil engineering profession. One major change is that we will now have the option to waive the requirement for having a master’s degree for applicants who have many years of experience. The other change is that the fee for renewing your Diplomate status will go up to $150 per year beginning with the upcoming renewal cycle.
Finally, I wanted to inform you of recent transitions with our AAWRE staff due to a reorganization at ASCE. Former AAWRE staff Frank Kim has rejoined our staff, as Brian Sien and Deb Connor has been assigned to other programs at ASCE. On behalf of the AAWRE Board and Committees, we want to thank Deb and Brian for their work and contributions to the Academy and we welcome back Frank to his familiar role. If you would like to contact any of the staff, their contact information will remain the same.
Thank you for your continued loyal support of the AAWRE and our mission to advance the practice of water resources engineering!
