Dr. Lin Luo, a professor at the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering, Sichuan University in Chengdu, China died October 11, 2009 in Chengdu at the age of 50. A member of EWRI, ASCE and a Diplomate of AAWRE, Professor Luo was Director of the Institute of Ecology & Environment and Coordinator of the International Office for the Key Laboratory. Before joining Sichuan University in 2000, Professor Luo had taught at Tongji University in Shanghai, China and the Chengdu University of Science & Technology. He also was a Visiting Scholar at Dundee University in Dundee, Scotland in 1994; at Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y., in 1997, and at Penn State University in University Park from August 1998 to January 2000.
Professor Luo was a very active member of many domestic as well as international professional societies. In addition to ASCE/EWRI, he was a member of the ASCE Urban Water Resources Research Council (UWRRC); IAHR Chinese branch of the Eco-Hydraulics Committee; the Urban Water Committee of the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society. Professor Luo was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hydro-Environment IAHR-APD; an Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal - Practice Periodical of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste Management, and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hydrodynamics. Over the years he had received many awards, including those from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Construction in China.
In April 2007, Professor Luo served as the General Secretary for the 5th International Urban Watershed Management, co-sponsored by the ASCE/EWRI/UWRRC, AAWRE, USEPA and University of Virginia. The Conference was held at Sichuan University. Many members of the AAWRE and UWRRC attended the Conference and were extremely impressed by Professor Luo's dedication and hospitality. In early 2009, Professor Luo, as a key member of the application team, helped secure the bid to hosting the 35th IAHR Congress in Chengdu, China in 2013, and was serving as the deputy head of the working group.
Born in 1959 in Chengdu, China, Professor Luo earned his bachelor degree in water supply and sewerage engineering from Chongqing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Chongqing, in 1982; his master degree in Environmental Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 1984; and then earned his doctoral degree in environmental hydraulics from Chengdu University of Science and Technology, Chengdu, in 1990. His main research areas included environmental fluid dynamics; computational fluid dynamics; environmental engineering and granular flows. In recent years he had focuses on mathematical modeling of water pollutant transport in large-scale reservoirs; optimum design of wastewater treatment facilities; parallel computing; scale effect of pollutant diffusion/dispersion in rivers and eco-hydraulics and hydrology.
Professor Shaw Yu reflects:
"Professor Luo was a dedicated scholar and a great teacher. He exemplified the old Chinese saying describing a fine teacher as one whom, when lecturing, makes everyone feels like sitting in a gentle breeze of spring wind. Forever his friends, colleagues and students will fondly remember him for his dedication to and enthusiasm for his work and also for his constant smile and kind manner. Lin Luo was a real gentleman."
